RailHawks Sign Jun Marques Davidson

Official Press Release

Midfielder Davidson joins RailHawks from Japan
Davidson, 26, comes to U.S. after eight seasons in J-League

CARY, N.C. (Feb. 26, 2009) - The Carolina RailHawks have signed midfielder Jun Marques Davidson.

At 26, Davidson is a young, up-and-coming player with a bright future, and he also has loads of experience. Prior to signing with the RailHawks, he played the last eight years in Japan, including the last five in the J-League’s top tier. Since his professional debut as an 18-year-old in 2002, Davidson played in 128 matches and scored two goals.

“He’s a player I’ve known about for years,” said RailHawks coach Martin Rennie. “He’s played over 100 games in the J-League and is a well-regarded player at that level. I’ve always wanted to work with him but I’ve never been able to because he’s always been under contract. His contract was up this year and we managed to convince him a change would be good for him and might help him fulfill his dream of playing in Europe. We’ve got a player who’s not reached his peak yet but already played at a high level for a number of years. He’s very clean on the ball and he can play a number of positions. So we’re excited to have him.”

Davidson will lend additional support and experience to the RailHawks defense that last year was among the best in all of U.S. professional soccer and is returning almost entirely in tact in 2010. The RailHawks last season posted 17 shutouts and a 0.63 goals against average.

Davidson, a Japanese-American, was born and raised in Tokyo before moving to Pasadena, Calif., where he spent his high school years at the American Global Soccer School. He then returned to Japan and made his professional debut with Omiya Ardija in 2002. After three seasons in the J-League Division 2, he helped the team see promotion to Division 1 after it finished second in the table in 2004. Davidson remained with Omiya Ardija until 2006, finishing his time with that club with 87 appearances to his credit.

He spent the last three seasons under contract with Albirex Niigata, one of the best supported teams in Japan that draws 30,000-40,000 fans per game.

“Martin knew I had an interest in coming to the States. I kept in touch with him and he explained to me everything about the team and got me interested,” Davidson said. “All the things he talked about, it was all positive. The facilities are great and the standard of play is very high. So all those things made me want to come, and I want to help the team win.”

RailHawks Add Maltese International

Official Press Release

RailHawks add Maltese international Barbara

CARY, N.C. (Feb. 25, 2010) - The Carolina RailHawks have signed forward Etienne Barbara, a 10-year veteran of the Maltese Premier League.

Barbara will provide additional firepower to a Carolina attack that in 2009 scored a club-record 43 goals, was shut out only seven times and was third in the league in shots taken and goals scored.

Barbara, 27, is currently playing for Hibernians, for whom he has appeared in 18 matches this season and scored four goals, in his native Malta. He will remain with the Hibs until late March.

“It never passed through my mind to play in America or that an opportunity could arise there,” Barbara said. “I couldn’t actually believe it until I met coach Martin [Rennie] when he came to Malta. He immediately had that professional approach and he was serious about it. Then the offer started to look attractive. I had opportunities to go to play in Europe, but America is a place that I’ve never been to and the professional setup and training facilities as Martin described them kept popping in my mind as a good challenge to look for. There are many teams and places where you can play football, but the right setup and facilities and having a good coach to help you develop your game is most important. So I’m looking forward to it.”

Barbara made his professional debut in 1999 with Floriana and remained with that club until 2003. There, he appeared in 74 matches and scored eight goals. During the January 2003 transfer window, he moved to the newly promoted Marsaxlokk, for whom he scored 21 goals in 43 appearances. In 2005, he moved to Birkirkara, where he scored 31 goals in 59 matches over two seasons. Barbara moved on to Sliema Wanderers in 2007, where he scored eight goals in 23 matches.

He then went to Germany’s SC Verl, where he made 18 appearances and logged 1,117 minutes but did not score a goal. After a trial with Sheffield Wednesday in England, Barbara returned to Malta and signed with Hibernians, the reigning league champion, last summer.

Barbara also has extensive international experience. He has been capped 30 times by the Malta National Team and has scored three goals in international play. He made his debut during a qualifying match at Israel for Euro 2004, and he scored his first two goals in a Feb. 2004 match against Estonia that ended a 2-2 draw. He scored his third goal in a 1-1 draw against Bulgaria in a 2006 World Cup qualifying match.

“Etienne’s played at a high level with the Maltese National Team, played against some of the best players in the world,” said RailHawks coach Martin Rennie. “He was a player I didn’t know too much about until a few months ago. I saw his videos and I was real impressed, and I spoke to some people who also told me, This guy is really, really good. I made the decision to go watch him play, and I was blown away by what he did. I’m hoping that will translate to our league, and I believe it will. He’s got pace, power and he can finish and he’s just an all-around player. He’ll add a lot to our squad.”

Palace Baltimore Assistant Coach Todd Wawrousek remarked: "I saw Evan play with Cleveland and he’s a great young talent with unlimited potential. He can compete for the number one spot with Chase. Evan is highly regarded in the league and, given continued growth and refinement, we feel he can compete at high levels in the game in the United States."

Co-Head Coach Jim Cherneski added: "Evan's got exceptional athletic ability. He started goalkeeping relatively late in life but he has tremendous upside."

"As for Chase," Cherneski added, "we played against him last year when he was with Harrisburg and he put in some excellent performances. That was a big factor in us signing him. We're looking forward to him being a part of the club."

Chase Harrison, 25 years old, played his college soccer at Virginia Tech from 2002 to 2005, appearing in 79 matches and maintaining an impressive 1.12 Goals Against Average. While with the Hokies, the 6’ 3" netminder also played for the West Virginia Chaos of the Premier Development League.

Bush and Harrison will vie for the starting spot left vacant by Palace Baltimore’s long-serving goalkeeper Brian Rowland, who has accepted a position as Assistant Coach with the highly-regarded University of Maryland men’s soccer program.

"Brian’s been an integral part of our team since the beginning," stated Palace Baltimore President and Co-Head Coach Pete Medd. "But he’s chosen to get into coaching and we wish him all the best. Crystal Palace Baltimore Add Three More Players

Official Press Release

CRYSTAL PALACE BALTIMORE ADD THREE MORE QUALITY PLAYERS
Signings of Nishimura, Fusilier and Lucio Bolster 2010 Squad

February 11th 2010 - Baltimore, MD - Crystal Palace Baltimore have further strengthened their 2010 squad with the addition of three more quality players. Takuro Nishimura comes to Palace from last season's USL First Division regular season champion Portland Timbers, Santiago Fusilier was a standout with the Carolina Railhawks while Lucio brings extensive experience from Brazil's top flight.

Palace Baltimore President and Co-Head Coach, Pete Medd, commented on the new signings: "We've known Lucio for a couple of years now. With his background, he brings a lots of skill and flair to the team. He's a calming influence on the field and he brings leadership to the squad. You get him around the goal and he knows how to put it away, as evidenced by his scoring in the indoor leagues and in the Brazilian first division. Nishimura again brings a wealth of experience to the squad. He played a big part in Portland's great run last season. He's very versatile, he can play at the left or the right at the back or in midfield, he has extremely good feet and is just a consummate professional. Santiago is a very flashy, skillful Argentinian who really brings a lot of excitement to the fans - he was a fan favorite down in Carolina. He's tricky with the ball and a good dribbler - he brings that creative, offensive flair that we were missing last year. He can play anywhere across midfield or up top. We expect big things from him, lots of production."

Veteran Japanese defender Takuro Nishimura, 32, spent his first season in the U.S. with the Portland Timbers last year, helping them win the 2009 USL First Division regular season title, a remarkable turnaround from the previous season's last place finish. Prior to joining the Timbers, the 5' 9" Tokyo native played in Japan's J-League from 2001 to 2008. Nishimura began his professional career in 2001 with the Urawa Red Diamonds of J-League 1, but failed to break into the first team starting lineup during three seasons with the club. He subsequently joined local rivals Omiya Ardija in 2004, helping his side win promotion from J-League 2 into J-League 1 that year. He remained with the club through 2008, departing Japan with a total of 90 league matches to his name. Nishimura attended Kokushikan University in Setagaya, Tokyo from 1997 to 2000, winning the All-Japan Prime Minister Cup. Earlier, he was a part of Japan’s youth national team system, competing at the U-14 level.

Santiago Fusilier, 26, is an Argentine midfielder who spent the 2007 and 2008 seasons in the former USL First Division with the Carolina RailHawks, making a total of 40 appearances. The 5' 9" Buenos Aires native tore his ACL in the final game of the 2007 regular season against Portland, but he came back strong in 2008, tallying four goals and three assists in the league, along with one goal in the US Open Cup, earning the club's Offensive Player of the Year award. He spent much of the 2009 season in Argentina training with Chacarita Juniors and playing with their reserve team, but he and the club were unable to agree terms on a contract. Fusilier played as a defensive midfielder for North Carolina State University from 2003 to 2006, playing in 64 games and notching four goals and seven assists, helping the Wolfpack reach the 2003 and 2005 NCAA tournaments. While at NC State, he also played for PDL club Raleigh Elite.

29 year old Lucio (full name Lucio Luiz de Oliveira Gonzaga) is an attacking midfielder from Sao Paulo, Brazil. He enjoyed a brief stint with USL Second Division club Real Maryland last season, notching two goals and an assist in seven games. For the past three seasons, Lucio has enjoyed a highly successful indoor career with the Baltimore Blast - where he won the 2007 championship - and with the New Jersey Ironmen. Prior to his move to the United States, Lucio spent eight years playing in Brazil:

- 2006-2007: A.D. Sao Caetano (First Division)
- 2003-2006: Rio Branco Andradas (First Division)
- 2002-2003: A.A. Araxa (Second Division)
- 2000-2002: Racing Club Montevideo (First Division)

VANCOUVER, BC - Vancouver Whitecaps FC announced today that on Saturday, March 6, the men's team will host Major League Soccer (MLS) club Seattle Sounders FC at Swangard Stadium in Burnaby, BC. The pre-season match will kick off at 4 p.m. PT.

All tickets for the match will cost $15, plus applicable service charges. Whitecaps season ticket holders will receive priority purchase rights and the remaining tickets will be available to the public on Wednesday, February 17 at 10 a.m. PT. Tickets will be available online at ticketmaster.ca or by calling 604.280.4400.

The Sounders are led by two-time MLS Coach of the Year Sigi Schmid and include key players like Swedish midfielder Freddie Ljungberg, who was a member of the 2009 MLS Best XI and a former standout at Arsenal FC in the English Premier League. The squad also includes the talented Colombian and 2009 MLS Newcomer of the Year Fredy Montero. Team captain Kasey Keller is one of American soccer's most decorated goalkeepers. The Washington State native spent a large portion of his career playing in England, Spain, and Germany before returning home to join Sounders FC.

The March 6 match will be the second meeting between these two Interstate 5 rivals this pre-season. This Thursday, the Whitecaps and Sounders will meet in a pre-season training match at the Grande Sports World facility in Casa Grande, Arizona. Last February, both clubs met in a closed-door pre-season friendly match at Seattle's Qwest Field.

The Swangard match will also be the first time that the MLS Sounders have played in British Columbia, with both clubs set to renew this Pacific Northwest rivalry in 2011 when Vancouver joins MLS as the league's 17th team. Between 1974 and 2008, the Whitecaps and Sounders had no less than 111 competitive meetings between each other. The first 28 matches took place in the old North American Soccer League (NASL) between 1974 and 1983, with the 'Caps recording 17 wins and 11 defeats versus the Sounders. Soccer fans in Seattle and Vancouver then had to wait until 1994 for the rivalry to be renewed, with the Sounders claiming the upper hand during 83 meetings in the former United Soccer Leagues First Division (USL-1). Between 1994 and 2008, the Sounders recorded 43 wins, 25 defeats, and 15 draws versus the Whitecaps. Those recent results meant that Seattle command a favourable record of 54 wins, 42 defeats, and 15 draws in their 111 competitive matches with Vancouver.

The Whitecaps are currently in Arizona for two-week pre-season trip in Arizona. Following their stay at the Grande Sports World facility, the players will have a week off before training camp re-opens on Monday, March 1, at the Whitecaps Training Centre on the campus of Simon Fraser University. Additional pre-season matches will be announced shortly.

Whitecaps 2010 season tickets are now on sale. Pejic Joins from Vancouver, Patterson and Yoshitake from Charleston

Defender Shaun Pejic joins from the Vancouver Whitecaps, while attack-minded pair Randi Patterson and Tsuyoshi Yoshitake were both with the Charleston Battery.

Palace Baltimore assistant coach Todd Wawrousek spoke about the new signings: "When we got Shaun in August last year at Vancouver, he was a season changer for us, solving our problems at center back. His qualities are he’s very poised, very consistent and very confident. He injects that important calming influence into the players around him. Yoshi is the kind of player who, whenever he’s on the ball, brings spectators to the edge of their seats. He has that kind of excitement to his game - he’s very pacy and he loves the challenge of taking on opponents 1-v-1. As a wide midfielder he’s a component that you really need to break teams down and he does that well. Randi has an incredible work ethic - he looks as energetic in the 85th minute of a game as he does in the 5th minute. He’s a very explosive player and he can change the game for you at any moment."

"We’re thrilled to have these three pivotal players in the mix," Wawrousek concluded. "When you have proven commodities in this league, the kind of players whose names you put check marks against when you’re planning to play against them, it puts you in a very strong position when you have them on your side. They are all consummate professionals and I look forward to working with them to bring out their best and to make them a part of a productive Palace team."

Shaun Pejic comes to Palace from fellow NASL and USSF Divison II club Vancouver Whitecaps FC. The 27-year old Hereford, England native signed for the Whitecaps for the final third of their 2009 season, making a total of nine appearances. RailHawks Re-Sign Gregory Richardson

Official Press Release

Richardson returning to RailHawks
Guyanese midfielder had 17 points in 14 matches last season

CARY, N.C. (Feb. 5, 2009) - Guyanese midfielder Gregory Richardson has re-signed with the Carolina RailHawks on a one-year deal with a club option for 2011, the club announced Friday.

Richardson joined the RailHawks in mid-season 2009 and made an immediate impact. Though he rated 17th on the team in minutes played (971), he tied for the team lead in assists (five) and was second in goals scored (six) and points (17).

“Signing Gregory is a huge bonus for us,” said RailHawks coach Martin Rennie. “In the second half of the season, he was involved in so many of the goals that we scored. He’s got something a little bit different in the final third of the field where he can beat players and he can score. Those kinds of players are hard to find. Now that he knows his surroundings and he knows where he is, I think he can have a big season and I’m excited to have him back.”

Richardson made his RailHawk debut while on trial with the team in a July 3 friendly against Wilmington and assisted on Kupono Low’s 35th-minute goal. On July 26, he registered the third hat trick in club history when he scored three goals in a 4-0 win over Miami. Against Miami on Aug. 26, he had a goal and two assists. On Sept. 12, he scored the fastest goal in club history when he tucked one in in the second minute against Puerto Rico, and he had an assist in that game.

Richardson began his professional career in 2005-06, playing with Beacon and Pele FC in his native Guyana. In 2007, he signed with Joe Public FC of the Trinidad & Tobago Pro League. He led the team to the 2008 First Citizens Cup, scoring four goals in four games, and he was the top goal scorer and MVP of the tournament. He made a name for himself and Joe Public in the 2008-09 CONCACAF Champions League when he scored five goals in four matches - including a hat trick plus an assist in a 4-0 romp over the New England Revolution - to lead Joe Public to the tournament’s group stage. In January 2009, Richardson went on trial with Toronto FC and appeared in three preseason matches for TFC. In February, he was traded to the Colorado Rapids, where he remained until his midseason transfer to the RailHawks.
